EVA Air to order Boeing 777 freighter to boost cargo capacity

TAIWAN’s EVA Airways has announced it will order an additional Boeing 777 freighter which it expects to be delivered by the end of 2023 to increase the airline’s competitive edge in the cargo market, reports Taipei’s Central News Agency.

The new aircraft, together with EVA’s eight existing cargo aircraft and plans to convert three of its Boeing 777-300ER passenger jets into freighters, will give EVA Air a fleet of 12 freighters by 2025, the airline said.

“We continually evaluate passenger and cargo market needs so we can appropriately increase capacity, meet demand and enhance our risk management capabilities,” said EVA Air president Clay Sun.

Mr Sun cited Boeing estimates that the air cargo market will increase at an annual compound growth rate of four per cent to 4.6 per cent over the next 20 years. By 2040, global freighter demand will climb by more than 70 per cent, he said.

The airline decided to place the order to meet the expected expansion of the air freight market and the airline’s own long-term flight network planning and business demands, Mr Sun said.

According to EVA Air, the Boeing 777 freighter is the world’s largest twin-engine air cargo aircraft with a maximum capacity of 106 tons.

EVA Air has equipped its Boeing 777 freighters with the same turbofan engines that power its existing thirty-four B777-300ER passenger aircraft. As a result, B777-300ER flight crews can easily fly the dedicated freighters after training to master the differences between the aircraft, the company said.

Consistency in its aircraft models and engines gives the carrier extra flexibility for crew deployment and elevates maintenance-management efficiencies, leading to operational benefits, EVA Air said.
